Location
Most visitors to the Lake District gravitate towards the central regions with the pretty but crowded towns and villages such as Windermere, Ambleside and Grasmere. Those who do wend their way westward find a much quieter area with some stunning scenery. The towering mountains and screes of Wasdale contrast with the peaceful Eskdale Valley through which the River Esk flows from its source high on the slopes of Scafell to the Irish Sea at Ravenglass.
3 miles from Ravenglass, which is the home of the La’al Ratty miniature railway and the splendid Muncaster Castle is Waberthwaite, a tiny hamlet scattered along the A595. The village church with its Anglican cross and Norman font is one of the few remaining with box pews. Its appearance must have changed little since it was built 800 years ago. A little further South, just off the main road towards Newbiggin, are the premises of Richard Woodall.
The shop, which doubles as the village post office, still retains most of its original Victorian shop fittings and gives a glimpse into a bygone age of retailing. Here you may see the full range of goods we produce as well as fresh meat, general groceries and other delicatessen items.
